ITT SETTLES PATENT DISPUTE WITH NOKIA
WASHINGTON – ITT Corp. has announced the company reached patent-infringement settlement of claims it filed against Nokia Oyj over assisted- global position system technology.
Financial details weren’t disclosed. Frank Jimenez, ITT’s general counsel, said in a statement the company is “fully committed to protecting ITT’s valuable intellectual property portfolio.” ITT filed the lawsuit last year against Nokia and other mobile-phone companies, including Verizon Wireless Motorola Inc., LG Electronics Inc., and Kyocera Corp. as well as mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. Those cases remain pending. The 1994 patent protects a GPS system that can transmit position information to mobile receivers from Earth-orbiting satellites in urban areas with line-of-sight obstructions, according to its U.S. Patent and Trademark Office description. ITT settled a similar lawsuit over the same patent in the same court in 2006. The company filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. in 2003. Samsung agreed to resolve the case on the eve of trial under undisclosed terms.
